Entry requirements
A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)
About this course
BA in Italian and Norwegian, a German and Italian degree focusing on the study of two European languages and cultures over four academic years. Core topics include Language & Translation, Communication & Writing, and Research Methods. Students spend the third year undertaking a compulsory period abroad immersed in the cultures and societies of both languages. The first year introduces the fundamentals through First Year Italian Language, Introduction to Italian Studies 1, Introduction to Italian Studies 2, and Introduction to Norwegian Language and Culture. The second year builds proficiency with Second Year Italian Language and Intermediate Norwegian Language and Culture, alongside optional modules such as Italian Culture during Fascism or Intermediate Old Norse. In the final year, students complete advanced study through Final Year Italian Language and Advanced Norwegian Language and Culture, supported by compulsory project work. Optional modules in the final year allow further specialisation in topics ranging from Futurism in Italy to Crime and Small Communities in Nordic Literature, with options for a dissertation in Scandinavian Studies.
