Entry requirements

A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)

About this course

BA in Italian and Serbian/Croatian, an Italian and Russian Studies degree centred on the language, literature, and cultural history of both regions. Core topics include Research Methods. The course is taught across the School of Slavonic and East European Studies and the School of European Languages, Culture and Society. The first year covers language acquisition and foundational cultural studies through First Year Italian Language, Introduction to Italian Studies 1, War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema, and Serbian and Croatian Language Level 1. The second year advances linguistic proficiency alongside historical and literary analysis via Second Year Italian Language, Writing from the Other Europe, Serbian and Croatian Language Level 2a-Comprehension, and Introduction to Serbian and Croatian Literature, with optional study available in areas such as Italian Culture during Fascism, Italian Literature 1860-1925, and Dante and Petrarch. The third year consists of a year abroad spent studying or working in relevant linguistic regions. The final year consolidates advanced proficiency through Final Year Italian Language, Serbian and Croatian Language Level 3a - Comprehension, Serbian and Croatian Language Level 3b - Production, and Serbian and Croatian Literature 3, while optional modules allow specialisation in subjects like Futurism in Italy, Dante: Divina Commedia, and Words and Images: Italian Film Adaptations, alongside an optional Free-standing Dissertation.
