Entry requirements

A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)

About this course

BA in Norwegian and Russian, a German and Russian Studies degree centred on the study of two distinct European languages and cultural traditions. Core topics include Research Methods. The course is taught across the School of Slavonic and East European Studies and the School of European Languages, Culture and Society, and includes an academic year spent abroad. The first year introduces Norwegian Language and Culture, Introduction to Nordic Studies 1, Introduction to Nordic Studies 2, Introduction to Russian Studies I, and Introduction to Russian Studies II. The second year focuses on Intermediate Norwegian Language and Culture alongside options covering Nordic Literature in Context and Intermediate Old Norse. The third year consists of a year abroad spent studying or working in the relevant regions. The final year involves Advanced Norwegian Language and Culture, Advanced Project Work in Danish, Norwegian or Swedish, Comprehension of Russian (Year 4), and Use of Russian (Year 4). Optional modules in the final year allow students to explore topics such as Northern Sites and Cities: Perspectives of Urban and Cultural Geographies of the Nordic Region, Vikings and Valkyries in Contemporary Culture, and Chekhov: The Quest for Freedom.
