Entry requirements

A level: ABB (Previous study of a foreign language is preferred (not necessarily one of the named languages) but not required. Applicants may study two languages at beginner level and may seek advice from the departments concerned if needed.) IB: 34 points (A total of 16 points in three higher level subjects, with no higher level score below 5. Foreign language preferred.)

About this course

BA in Norwegian and Ukrainian, a German and Russian Studies degree centred on the study of two distinct linguistic and cultural traditions. Core topics include Research Methods. This four-year undergraduate course is taught across two departments, the School of Slavonic and East European Studies and the School of European Languages, Culture and Society, and includes an integrated year abroad. The first year introduces foundational linguistic and cultural concepts through modules such as Introduction to Norwegian Language and Culture, Introduction to Nordic Studies 1, War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema, and Ukrainian Language Level 1. The second year builds proficiency with compulsory modules including Intermediate Norwegian Language and Culture, Ukrainian Language Level 2a-Comprehension, Ukrainian Language Level 2b-Production, and Ukrainian Culture and Text A, alongside options in Scandinavian languages and Nordic literature. The third year consists of a year abroad placement. The final year focuses on advanced study with compulsory modules such as Advanced Norwegian Language and Culture, Advanced Project Work in Danish, Norwegian or Swedish, The Making of Modern Ukraine I, and Ukrainian Language Level 3a - Comprehension. Optional modules in the final year cover areas such as urban geographies, translation, and Viking-Age Scandinavia, and students may also complete a free-standing dissertation.
