About this course

BA in Modern Languages, a modern languages degree focusing on the study of two or three languages and their cultural contexts. The course includes a year spent abroad studying, working, or acting as a language assistant. Students can choose between route one, which involves studying two languages alongside culture and translation modules, and route two, which involves studying three languages with a culture module. The first year covers foundational language learning and culture study across the chosen languages. Students select their languages from a range including French, German, Italian, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Russian. Depending on the chosen route, fifty or seventy-five percent of time is devoted directly to language acquisition. The curriculum also incorporates thematic culture modules spanning the societies associated with the studied languages.

Modules

  • Route One: study two languages, exploring associated cultures and societies
  • Route Two: study two languages and selected cultural contexts, with a third language in addition
