Entry requirements
A level: AAB including at least one of German or Spanish IB: 35 points including 5 in German or Spanish at Higher Level. BTEC: DDD. An A level or equivalent qualification in either German or Spanish will be required.
About this course
BA (Hons) German and Spanish (with a year abroad), a degree in German and Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies focusing on modern language acquisition and cultural studies. Students spend the third year on a study or work placement abroad. The course includes a compulsory year abroad component. The first year covers foundational language proficiency and cultures through German Language and Cultures: Upper Intermediate, Spanish Language and Cultures: Upper Intermediate, Understanding Language in the Real World, Understanding German-speaking Cultures and Societies, and Understanding Spanish-speaking Cultures and Societies, with options such as Phonetics and Phonology. The second year advances linguistic competence via German Language and Cultures: Advanced and Spanish Language and Cultures: Advanced, alongside optional modules like The Berlin Republic and Sociolinguistics. The final fourth year ensures high-level fluency through German Language and Cultures: Proficient and Spanish Language and Cultures: Proficient. Optional modules across stages span diverse areas such as Translation: Methodology and Practice, Latinos in the USA, and Independent Study in Languages and Cultures.
