About this course

BA (Hons) History and History of Art is an undergraduate degree within the History and History of Art subject area, combining the study of past societies with the visual culture they produced. Core topics include Research Methods. Field trips to cultural institutions across the country provide firsthand experience and professional connections. The first year establishes fundamental competencies through compulsory modules such as Art History Now, Materials of Art and Architecture, Transmissions and Connections, Knowledge and Beliefs in World History, Evidence and Methods, Political Communities in World History, and Societies and Economies in World History. The second year builds on this foundation with compulsory study in Art and Its Institutions and Historical Thinking, alongside a wide range of optional topics such as Indo-British Art, c.1527-1947, Surrealism: Art and Liberty, and Crime and Society in Britain and Ireland since 1750. In the final year, students complete a History Dissertation and a History of Art Dissertation, complemented by further optional study in areas such as Empires, Violence, and Animals.
