About this course

BA (Hons) History of Art with German (with a year abroad), a Modern Languages and History of Art degree focusing on the intersection of visual culture and linguistic study. Core topics include Research Methods. The course includes an integrated year abroad spent studying at a partner institution or undertaking a work placement, alongside a final-year dissertation. The first year introduces foundational themes through compulsory modules such as Transmissions and Connections, Art History Now, The Practices of Art History, and The Materials of Art and Architecture, alongside dedicated language study. The second year expands into institutional frameworks and advanced linguistic training through modules including Art and Its Institutions, Research Skills for Art History, and German Language and Cultures: Advanced. Students can select optional topics spanning global art history, fashion, architecture, and cinema. The final year requires the completion of a BA Dissertation and German Language and Cultures: Proficient, supported by further optional choices from historical periods, geographical regions, and modern media.
