About this course

BA (Hons) Linguistics with German, an English Language and Linguistics and German degree centred on language structures and modern language proficiency. The first year establishes foundations through compulsory modules such as German Language and Cultures: Upper Intermediate, Language and the Mind, Understanding Language in the Real World, and Understanding German-speaking Cultures and Societies, with optional choices including English Past and Present, Phonetics and Phonology, and Syntactic Structures. The second year advances linguistic and cultural study via compulsory modules including German Language and Cultures: Advanced and Foundations of Meaning, alongside optional topics such as The Berlin Republic, Acoustic Phonetics and Phonological Analysis, Sociolinguistics, and Language Acquisition. The final year allows students to tailor their studies through numerous optional modules spanning areas like Forensic Phonetics, Psycholinguistics: Language Processing, Neurolinguistics: Language and the Brain, and Translation: Methodology and Practice, with options to undertake independent study projects.
