Entry requirements

A level: AAB including A in Music If you are not taking A level Music we will accept AAB in three A Levels plus ABRSM or Trinity Grade 5 Theory and Grade 8 Performance. Other equivalent qualifications and exam boards may be considered on a case by case basis. IB: 35 points including 6 in Music at Higher Level BTEC: DDD in Music. If you are taking a BTEC in a different subject, an additional A Level or equivalent qualification in Music will be required.

About this course

BA (Hons) Music, a music degree exploring academic, historical and practical dimensions of the discipline. Core topics include Critical & Analytical Thinking, Ethics & Professional Practice. The curriculum integrates practical performance, musicology, analysis, and sound technology. The first year introduces foundational concepts through compulsory modules such as Core Skills for Musical Study, Listen to This!: Critical Approaches to Music 1, Creative and Professional Practice 1, and Analyse This!: Critical Approaches to Music 2, alongside various optional choices. The second year continues with compulsory study in Critical Thinking and Listening and Creative and Professional Practice 2, paired with options covering history, conducting, and composition. The final year involves advanced compulsory modules including Extended Recital, Extended Composition Folio, Extended Solo Project, and Creative and Professional Practice 3. Students can further tailor their studies through numerous optional modules spanning specialized repertoire, advanced composition, and media music, with independent projects forming a central component of the final stage.
