About this course
BSc (Hons) Biochemistry, a biochemistry degree focusing on the molecular basis of health and disease within the life sciences. Core topics include Research Methods. Students can undertake an optional industrial placement year or study abroad period, and the course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology. The first year establishes core foundations through compulsory modules such as Becoming a Bioscientist: Core Skills, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, Fundamentals of Chemistry for Biochemists 1, Becoming a Bioscientist: Biochemical Skills, Genetics, and Cells to Organisms. The second year advances practical abilities through compulsory study in Becoming a Bioscientist: Experimental Design and Communication, Biochemical Reactions and Interactions, Becoming a Bioscientist: Research in Action, and Chemical and Structural Biology. Optional modules in the second year allow students to explore Gene Expression in Action, Cell Biology, Molecular Microbiology, The Immune System, Neuroscience, Pharmacology, Molecular Biotechnology, Introduction to Bioenterprise, and Medical Genetics. The final year centres on a compulsory Research Project. Optional study in the final year covers Molecular Machinery in Action, Advanced Topics in Biotechnology, Chemistry and Disease, Molecular Recognition, Advanced Topics in Gene Expression, Cancer, Cell and Molecular Biology, Pathogens, Ageing and Regenerative Medicine, Genomics, Advanced Topics in Neuroscience, Haematology and Immunology in Health and Disease, and Trends in Microbiology.
