About this course
BSc (Hons) Physics (with a year in industry), a physics degree centred on classical mechanics, quantum waves, and modern physical principles. Core topics include Statistics, Research Methods, and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. The programme includes a professional placement year in industry, and graduates are eligible to work towards Chartered Physicist status through Institute of Physics accreditation. The first year covers foundational concepts through compulsory modules such as Classical Mechanics and Laboratories, Classical and Quantum Waves, Mathematical, Computational and Professional Skills 1, Electromagnetism and Relativity, and Mathematical, Computational and Professional Skills 2. The second year progresses to Thermodynamics and Electromagnetism, Mathematics, Professional Skills and Laboratories, Statistical and Solid State Physics, Quantum, Atomic, Nuclear and Particle Physics, Advanced Mechanics, Physics Laboratories and Skills, Mathematical Techniques and Machine Learning, and Astrophysical Technologies and Space Science. The final year centres on the compulsory BSc Research Project and Skills. Students can also select from optional topics including Plasma Physics and Fusion, Quantum Mechanics, Advanced Theoretical Techniques and Modelling Matter, and Scientific Supercomputing.
