About this course
MBiol (Hons) Biotechnology is an undergraduate degree in microbiology and human biology that investigates the application of microorganisms in medicine and industry. Core topics include Research Methods and Fieldwork. The course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology and provides options for an additional year in industry or studying abroad. The first year covers foundational bioscience through compulsory modules such as Life on Earth, Genetics, Molecules of Life, Cells to Organisms, and two Becoming a Bioscientist modules. The second year focuses on experimental design and molecular biotechnology, with optional choices including Cell Biology, Molecular Microbiology, and Introduction to Bioenterprise. Year 3 involves advanced topics in biotechnology and a group research project, alongside optional subjects like Genomics and Pathogens. The final fourth year centres on advanced research training through compulsory modules including Research Project, Research Skills, and Research Proposal.
