About this course
MPhys (Hons) Physics with Astrophysics, a physics and physics with astrophysics degree focusing on the exploration of the cosmos through foundational and advanced physical principles. Core topics include Statistics and Research Methods. The course is accredited by the Institute of Physics, putting graduates on track to becoming a Chartered Physicist. The first year covers core foundations through Classical Mechanics and Laboratories, Classical and Quantum Waves, and Mathematical, Computational and Professional Skills 1. The second year progresses into specialized areas with Thermodynamics and Electromagnetism, Astrophysical Technologies and Space Science, and Quantum, Atomic, Nuclear and Particle Physics. The third year builds advanced competence via modules such as Advanced Astrophysical Laboratory, Stars and Galaxies, and Relativity and Cosmology. The final year centers on the MPhys Research Project and Skills. Optional modules across later stages allow students to study subjects including Plasma Physics and Fusion, Astrobiology, and Scientific Supercomputing.
