About this course
MPhys (Hons) Physics (with a year abroad) is a physics degree exploring the fundamental forces and structure of the universe. Core topics include Statistics, Research Methods, and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. Students spend the fourth year of this five-year programme studying abroad at a partner university, and the degree is accredited by the Institute of Physics. The first year introduces foundational principles through modules such as Classical Mechanics and Laboratories, Classical and Quantum Waves, and Electromagnetism and Relativity. The second year builds competence with Thermodynamics and Electromagnetism, Statistical and Solid State Physics, and Mathematical Techniques and Machine Learning. The third year offers optional study in areas like Quantum Mechanics, Plasma Physics and Fusion, and Relativity and Cosmology. The final year centres on the MPhys Research Project and Skills, alongside optional modules including Scientific Supercomputing, Biophysics, and Cosmic Horizons.
